Apple iPhone without Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) feature obtained a five-year RTETAC (Radio Transmission Equipment Type Approval Certificate) from China's SRMC (State Radio Monitoring Center), the Sohu IT News reported on June 11. Obtaining SRMC's certificate is deemed as one of the requirements to obtain a network access license from China's MIIT (Ministry of Industry and information Technology), thereby marking a significant step forward for Apple in its efforts to sell iPhones in China.

The models sent for testing included Wi-Fi and Non-Wi-Fi iPhone models and supported GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications), WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access), and Bluetooth. It is learnt that Wi-Fi iPhones will have to support China's homegrown wireless technology, called WAPI (WLAN Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure), in order to obtain network access licenses from MIIT. The iPhone will still need to go through several tests before receiving an network access license though.
